NY Post discovers alt comedy

I missed it yesterday but found out about it during Welcome to our Week last night:

Alt Mockers

Last night was great, though, once again, a signal that I've been going to too much comedy. I'd seen Liam do his set before, and had heard Sara Schaefer's bit too but she was hilarious anyway - I mean, you gotta love a girl who can just belt out "You Oughta Know" all loud and fierce onstage. Plus, she had a mixtape - yay for music in my comedy. I also saw some people I'd never seen before, and Jessi read from her junior high diary. And I had a date, which I don't think I've ever had at a comedy show, so that was something new. And I finally got to meet the lovely, gorgeous and totally sweet Kambri Crews. Congrats to Christian Finnegan, who was on The Today Show this morning.

June show posting

I'm working on a big post about June shows, so if you have any, email them to me at blog at rachelkramerbussel.com (or if you have my yahoo addy), and I'm gonna compile them into one big post.

ECNY Finalists!

VOTE FOR EMERGING COMICS OF NEW YORK AWARDS - FINALISTS ARE UP (there are some typos but I'm not a copyeditor, at least, not for them, but anyway, I'm sure you can figure out what's up). I don't believe in telling you who to vote for, cause I have no idea of your comedic taste, so am just (as always) sharing mine.

I voted for:

Best Standup (Female) - Margot Leitman

Best Standup (Male) - Aziz Ansari

Best Musical Comedy Act - Jessica Delfino

Best One Person Show - Swollen Head (by Rich Zeroth)

Best Variety Show/Best Host of a Variety Show or Comedic Event - This is a huge tossup for me, I really, really, really like both Welcome to Our Week and The Rejection Show. WTOW happens more often so I get to go to it more, but the Rejection Show is really special (I mean, where else can you see your friends dancing with a bear?). You decide. I will, at some point. Same goes for hosts, though I will probably go Jessi and Nick on hosting, because their banter, especially the letters, totally crack me up, and the voices, the voices - I really cannot see or hear "LOL" in the same way again. Thanks, Nick. But anyway, I love both these shows and hopefully will get to them as often as possible from here on out. Mark your calendars - every Thursday at 8 is WTOW at Rififi, and every third Wednesday at 8 is The Rejection Show at PS 122. ps. I voted for The Rejection Show as Best Variety Show and Nick and Jessi as best hosts, but am still thankful these shows aren't on the same nights because those and WYSIWYG are some of my favorite entertainments around.

Best Comedy writer - Todd Levin

Best Comedic Website - youcantmakeitup.blogspot.com - Michelle Collins always cracks me up

Best Venue - ? I don't know. I want to say Juvie Hall, but I actually like Rififi the best, but mostly because it's close to my train. So I don't know. So there's my personal picks, though once again, I endorse everyone listed to the left (or above, as the case may be in your browser) and try to go to everything that I can while squeezing in the rest of my life around my comedygoing.

Brutal Honesty is back

As soon as I get done eating cupcakes on June 1st, I'm hitting this show up (editorial commentary from the wonderful Lianne Stokes - I think it's at 8 or 8:30, not sure:

It Came From New York!

My friend Marie is in this really cool show It Came From New York - here's her email about it:

I know this is really short notice, and I don't expect
any of you to come (how can I compete with Rick
Moody?), but if you're looking for something fun to
do, I highly recommend this. It's funnier than
anything you'll see on the tv. Also, my story tomorrow
will feature BOOTSIE, my cousin's boyfriend who was
missing his 2 front teeth by the time he was 16.

I'll also be doing the 5/25 show, and by then you'll
be very sick of my spam.

Last night's sidewalk humor

The funniest comedy I've seen in a while took place outside Juvie Hall last night, listening to Michelle Collins riff on why the show was cancelled with an audience made up of me, Chelsea Peretti, GirlyNYC, Susie Felber, and The Wiener Philharmonic. I can't even recall what she said but it was hilarious; next time a show is cancelled, I hope it's as funny as that was!

This N' More tonight!!!

Michelle Collins TOTALLY makes me laugh and I'm sure will tonight - get on her email list for emails like this, but in color and bold:

You guys, I never beg people to come to my show -- most of you just show up on your own good will, and for that, I owe you.

BUT TONIGHT!  Please come!!! PLEASE!  Sense my need and dependency through your electronic mail system....  And the good news, it's gonna be a fucking great show, so WHY WOULD YOU MISS IT?!?!?!  And I've even written NEW stuff JUST FOR THE SHOW!

This N' More

Tonight, Juvie Hall (24 Bond Street) at 8 pm

Michelle Collins hosts a gaggle of fine fine comedians:

with AMAZING SPECIAL GUESTS:

Jim Norton!
Rachel Feinstein!
Curtis Gwinn!

John Gemberling!

Chelsea Peretti!
Jessica Delfino!
Michael Showalter!

Seriously you guys YOU MUST COME! I'm never adamant about attendance and show but I am changing my iTune!! COME TO IT!!!! I'll sing and tapdance! WHATEVER IT TAKES! I am also very nice and genteel.  Oh and it only costs EIGHT MEASLY DOLLARS!

Looking forward to your arrival:

Michelle

Amanda Melson makes me laugh

Amanda Melson, who I see in the audience of lots of comedy shows (including Monday night's Aziz Ansari Punched A Wall), has updated her website and has lots of upcoming shows. She's a writer for and cast member of Sara Schaefer (is Obsessed With You) and does standup all over. Thanks to my new fave comedy blog The Apiary for pointing me to her updated site!

More another time, but Becky Yamamoto's PP Snatch was the funniest thing I've seen in ages and ages. HILARIOUS! Just totally cracked everyone up, anyone who's ever watched MTV or VH1 or secretly listens to Britney will adore it.

new comedy blog - The Apiary!

Check out this awesome comedy blog: The Apiary - thanks Nate for telling me about it.

PP Snatch is channeled by adorable comedian and improviser Becky Yamamoto. Opening acts Desiree Burch and The Dutch Treats. A certifiably insane spectacle is promised to all. Trust us, folks: this one¹s going to be good.

In their second full length show, Glennis McMurray and Liz Black prove that watching too much TV can feed the soul and provide ample inspiration for a sketch show. With InTouch Weekly as their Bible and The Oscars as Mecca, these two ladies turn their idolatry of celebrities and obsession with pop-culture into a religion.
Wanting nothing more than to sit at the right hand of Pitt and Aniston and ascend to the gates of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, they settle for imitation, reenactment and, well, standing near the bathroom at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
Written and performed by Glennis McMurray and Liz Black
Directed by Jackie Clarke

Standup comic and humorist Chelsea Peretti is the co-creator of the Rejection Line and Black People Love Us. In this workshop, participants will look at various comedic projects that have circulated widely on the web and then brainstorm ways to strengthen and build upon their own ideas for the competition. no me pegas

I have to love any comedy show that sends out their update in spanish. Plus I think I forgot to say, or at least, emphasize, just how freaking hilarious Becky Donohue was on Monday - I almost fell out of my chair, something only the rare comedian can get me to do.

NO HITTING, CINCO DE MAYO VERSION

WARNING: Becky's taking Spanish...

Esta semana para celebrar el cinco de mayo en el ano cinco estamos participando en un cambio con nuestra show de hermanos en mexico. (This week to celebrate cinco de mayo, we are participating in a foreign exchange with our sister show in mexico.) No quieres faltar este show. (You don't want to miss this show.) Vamos a rumbiar y disfrutar sobre todas las cosas bellas de la cultura mexicano, menos la droga, porque no queremos irnos a la carcel. (We will be enjoying many different things from the mexican culture, minus the drugs, we don't want to live our lives in prison.)

Esta semana tenemos mas estrellas que hay en Hollywood...Presentamos Patricia Candaras, Susita Felber, Jack Kukoda, Nick-O Stevens, y Roberto Tisdale. (Pat Candaras, Susie Felber, Nick Stevens, Jack Kukoda, and Bobby Tisdale.) Como siempre con sus hosts, Becky Donohue y Jeff Mac.

Y para llevar un pocito de allegria a su trabajo tan aburiddo, aqui son algunas cosas mexicanos que mejorar nuestra vida cada dia. (And to bring a bit of happiness to your boring job, here are some mexican things that improve our lives each day.):

GRACIAS, MEXICO!

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, here are five things that we wouldn't have if not for Mexico:

1. The Mexican Hat Dance - perhaps the most highly ranked of all the hat dances.
2. Mariachi Bands - equally for their music and their no-nonsense fashion style.
3. Selena! - not only the singer, but the Edward James Olmos made-for-TV movie. Mucho bueno!!
4. Stucco - it makes us feel as if we could make a house just by throwing mud around. Feels good, powerful.
5. Texas - Seriously, thanks, you guys. We've really enjoyed it since we got it from you. Anytime you need it back, though, you let us know. And please feel free to take the rest of the fucking South along with it. No charge.

Sweet on Thursday

from Seth Herzog:

This Sunday is Mother's Day (in case you forgot), a day when thousands of flowers are flout, cards are tout, and sons and daughters everywhere 'come out'. When you try make a mimosa and some cantaloupe make up for a whole year of neglect, and desperately try to steer the conversation away from the different ways you are 'ruining  your life'. But why wait til Sunday, you can experience all of this vicariously, when I host the weekly comedy crusade SWEET with MY MOTHER, this THURSDAY (5/5) down at the SLIPPER ROOM at 167 Orchard St. (SW corner of Orchard and Stanton) on the Lower East Side, where our ancestors spent many Mother's Day tried to keep their mothers happy with day old kreplach and an egg cream. The guilt begins at 8:30, and will only cost $5 and your soul.

Supplying a buffer this week for me and the things I refuse to face:

NY's finest concept comedian, host of "Giant Tuesdays....", featured last year on ABC's NY Comedy Fest wrap up, and my mom's favorite, ANDRE DU BOUCHET.

Perennial NY Irish comic (via Boston), (read: drunk and irascible) and now writer and co-creator of MTV's new game show, "Parentally Approved", (but you probably remember him as a the over the top, "Starburst Guy"), SEAN LYNCH.

Character chameleon, who's has shined in a string of hit shows at the UCB Theater, including "Fancy", "Killgore: The Musical", and "Cat News", you can hear her on Ch. 102.net, and see her punditing often on the VH-1, JULIE KLAUSNER.

And to my right, (of the stage, that is), he brought down the house last week with his unbelievable and envelope pushing telemarketer prank calls, playing people on and off live is traveling troubadour, singer song writer, and former musical theater queen, TEDDY GOLDSTEIN.

I voted, did you?

Well, I can scratch ECNY voting off my to do list! What a relief, seriously, I know too many freaking comedians to not have that be a tough call. Also tough: ECNY vs. Sleater-Kinney (which I still have to get tickets to).

I am not gonna do my entire rundown of votes, because I tried to share the wealth amongst my favorite funny peeps but I can tell you I voted for Aziz Ansari as my favorite male standup and Chelsea Peretti as my favorite female standup (also my answers the other night when someone asked who my favorite comedians are). All the people I've interviewed are favorites too and really all the people I link to are my "favorites" to some extent, so that will have to suffice. I'll save the personal ruminations for another time cause I want to keep this blog pretty much PG.

Comedy karma

I have zero aspirations to work in the comedy field, but am always happy when I can get people who make me laugh press or get them booked on shows. I caught Lee Camp one night at Comedy Pro Shop and when I found out he was about to be on Law & Order told him to contact Sara Schaefer and now he's doing her show on Friday (and Comedy Pro Shop on Sunday). Very cool. It's all about the karma, people. But I have to do that thing I'm supposed to do every day/night - write - a little more often so I'm trying to chill on the show-going. We'll see how it works out.

P.S. Check out all these adorable photos from Sara's show - I loved the "Rock Bottom" show and I so want one of those shirts. Soon she is gonna sell these cool shirts that say "Sara Schaefer Is Obsessed With Me" and I'm gonna get one. Anyway, yeah, "Rock Bottom" so describes many (but not all certainly) of my days that I need that shirt badly. This summer, I am all about the t-shirt.

begins after the 2004 Presidential Election, when the people of Massachusetts decide to take matters into their own hands and secede from the Union to create Massholia. For more information about Massholia and its run May 6-21, please visit www.massholia.com

funny peeps

super quick recap: monday nights = free comedy at Get Wood - I'm a new and big fan of Jessica Wood and her comedy show. Hilarious folks, a cozy East Village basement, and free candy! And I ran into Anne from The Hazzards on the street (that was just the icing on the cupcake of my night).

Also, check out the lovely Lianne Stokes on bad comedy.

Giulia Rozzi is hilarious. I'm so glad I got to see her show Stupid Foreigners, it was hilarious and honest and she had a mini food humping orgy and was just fantastic and brilliant and I hope she does it again. There are tons of UCB shows I want to see including Margot Leitman's Just Here for the Day about being a substitute teacher and Aziz Ansari Punched A Wall. So yeah, when I say I'm gonna take a break from comedy shows...don't believe me. Standup shows, maybe, but there is too much good stuff going on that I just can't miss.

another cool show tonight - Gettin' Wood
