Anyone else reading - please send me your listings! I can't guarantee I'll post them, but I'll do my best. I still have Pro Shop photos from Sunday night I've tried to load onto my laptop 3 times, to no avail, but soon they will be up. I took like 5 of Rob and Mark cause they made me laugh way harder than I have in months and months with their hilarious awesome song that I wish I could hear performed everyone night, called something like "No One Wants To Read Your Blog." It was awesome and had all the bloggers in the house falling on the floor. Oh, how true. Blogging is stupid, but I love it anyway.

Hey folks

Larry Getlen here, with an opportunity for comics to have their jokes and
promotional information in a book that will be available in just about every book
store in the country.

I am currently writing and compiling THE COMPLETE IDIOTS GUIDE TO JOKES. Part of the
very successful Idiots Guide series (over 20 million copies sold), the book will be
released in September 2006 through Alpha Books, an imprint of Penguin Publishing.
THE COMPLETE IDIOTS GUIDE TO JOKES will be a reference guide of over 1,500 of the
world’s funniest jokes cross-referenced by category, plus advice for the lay person
on how to tell a joke in any situation.

Every comic whose jokes are included in the book will, of course, be credited
immediately next to each of their jokes. In addition, the book will include a list
of every comedian whose jokes are featured, which means you get a brief bio,
including, if you like, your web page address (or, if you don’t have one, your
E-Mail address).

Here’s the deal.

1. The main rule for these jokes is, the shorter the better. One-liners or two- or
three-line jokes are best. When in doubt, 45 or 50 words is generally a good
cut-off. However, if it’s on the fence, or slightly over, send it.

2. Jokes are welcome in every topic.

3. As far as language goes, I’d say if the book was a movie, it would be mostly
PG-13 with flashes of R. No NC-17 or XXX. We’re going to generally avoid curse
words, but, if a joke is simply brilliant and needs the profanity, we may be able to
use it. When in doubt, send it.

4. HOWEVER, as far as subject matter is concerned, this is a book geared toward
adults. No topic is off limits.

5. Send as many jokes as you like.

6. I’m looking to receive submissions as soon as possible. The deadline is October
8, but if you can send it earlier, that would be great.

7. Please feel free to forward this message to all your comedian friends.

At comedian Rob Paravonian's birthday party last night. Because, clearly, I can't NOT attend any comedian's birthday party unless I'm out of the country. (Sorry, Claudia.) Anyway, I thought Rob was kidding when he said he was flying in pizza from Chicago, but he was totally serious. It was from Lou Malnati's and was quite delicious, though the cutting of the pizza seemed to take a little while. It was worth it though! I am not as big a pizza fanatic as Rob or Adam of Slice but I will happily eat other's circuitously acquired slices. I think that just may have been my first deep dish pizza. If I ever get myself back to Chicago, I may go there in person.

To bring this back to comedy...Rob's weekly show is Comedy Pro Shop, and it happens tomorrow night at Sin Sin Lounge at 2nd Avenue and 5th, and it's free. The lineup features Allison Castillo, Karith Foster, Dan Newbower, Rob & Mark, and who knows who else? And I might be bringing some cupcakes, but, you know, don't quote me on that.

Rejection Show raves

Last September, I went to my first Rejection Show, the last one they held at The Tank. I don’t remember everything about it, but I do recall Jon talking about Weekend at Bernies and Andres du Bouchet doing some rejected SNL skits. In that last year that I’ve been going (I missed I think the May one), the show has improved by leaps and bounds, and I last night was really excellent. There was so much going on and a real camaraderie amongst the performers, something I’ve found really makes a show work, and which I suppose is unpredictable but is heartwarming to see. Cassidy Henehan of The $1 Room, a New Orleans native, did a set that was funny but also very touching, and he’s clearly been through a hellish time these last few weeks. He showed us his NOLA tattoo and made us laugh about Katrina, and it seemed like it was really cathartic for him to be up there. Jon was a really funny host, as always - he read some rejected headlines he’d sent to The Onion, and used lots of dirty words that he rarely uses onstage. Adam Cole-Kelly did these hilarious back to school fashions, like a guy wearing just shorts, bare-chested, and a ghost and was just so deadpan about it while people were coming out in the most ridiculous getups, it was awesome. Michelle Collins seems to invoke The Holocaust almost every time I see her perform, but she was awesome as always - she kindof gives the impression that she’s just talking, telling a story like you’d hear at a bar, and this time it was about her Barnard days and waiting till 4days before graduation to write her thesis (“The Chosen Won?”) while also writing a skit about a girl whose retarded parents give her a baby for Christmas, where she was aided by Gabe and Lang from The Wiener Philharmonic. Bill Plympton, who I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t really know who he was, showed the pilot for his animated sitcom Helter Shelter that was really funny - it wouldn’t be as funny if I told you about it, but it’s about three mismatched roommates. Jackie The Jokeman Martling told about having an audience member heckle him loud enough for him to hear, and even though he made it into a funny story, it was also clear that those words had stayed with him for over a decade.

I think one of the best things about the show is that while there’s not audience participation per se (usually), there’s very rarely the sense of being shouted at, or being talked to or at, that there can be at comedy shows. There’s an inclusiveness between the stage and the crowd, and it’s as much about hearing the reactions of the people around you, of seeing who gets which New Yorker cartoons, of the rustles of excitement and laughter that make their way through the crowd, and I think this is in part because of the format of the show. There’s a sense that even though the people before us are successful in their chosen field, they are not always successful–they are not perfect. They have work rejected, even if they’ve been on TV, in movies, nominated for an Oscar, etc. And to be able to laugh at that, and at themselves, while also refuting the idea that those who hold the power to reject us hold all the power, is a really wonderful thing.

The show last night just held together really well, and it was clear from the little musical interludes to various segments that it wasn’t just cobbled together, that it was both deliberately crafted but also left room for improvising and the unexpected. I was kindof coughing my way through it but was really glad I was there and encourage those of you who haven’t been to check it out, for no other reason than I think it’ll make you laugh. Where I think the show really succeeds is that it’s not just a bunch of random people getting up and doing their own individual thing, but a definite cause of the whole being much greater than the sum of its parts, and it was clear that the performers also got a lot out of each others’ contributions. Nobody is full of themself or out to prove anything at the show, but simply to share something they wrote or made that might never otherwise be seen, and that also makes it special, because I know for me, when my work gets rejected, it’s very hard not to just take that at face value, to say, “Oh, okay, it wasn’t that good anyway, let’s move onto the next thing,” rather than actually examining how it might be improved or what parts of it might still be worthy.

The Aristocontest

DEAD-FROG.COM AND THE PEOPLES IMPROV THEATER PRESENT
“THE ARISTCONTEST” FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

New York, September 9, 2005 – For one night only, some of the best
comedians in New York City will take the stage at The Peoples Improv
Theater to present their version of the filthiest joke ever told: The
Aristocrats. The event is co-presented with Dead-Frog.com, home of the
Official Aristocrats Joke Database.

Starting with a simple set-up (a man walks into a managers office), and
ending with the punchline, “The Aristocrats,” the joke has been made
infamous by numerous retellings, and the recent documentary of the same
name. At this special showing, Ali Faranakhian (former writer for Saturday
Night Live), Andres du Bouchet (Giant Tuesday Night), Fearsome (2005 ECNY
nominees), and many more will present their own unique versions.

In addition to these guests, there will be a chance for audience members
to sign up to present their own version of the joke.

Dead-Frog.com is a well respected comedy analysis blog, and the home to
the official Aristocrats Database.

The Peoples Improv Theater is home to the Best Comedy Classes in New York
City (New York Magazine), and NYC’s Best Improv Group (Big Black Car, 2005
ECNYs). Improv, sketch comedy, stand-up, and comedic theater shows are
presented nightly.

Hey ya’ll, your pal Susie Felber here. I’m usually downright incompetent when it comes to telling people about my shows, but last night I whipped up info on five of my upcoming shows -- handpicked just for you.



The first two are free, at hip venues and I’m pointing you to them because they feature great comedians. The third is a benefit I’m hosting for victims of Hurricane Katrina. It features Colin Quinn and rumor has it ET will be covering this show.



The last two are shows in early October that are part of the NYC Underground Comedy Festival. The first I’m co-producing called “Selling It” features comedians who work in or have worked in advertising. The second is at swanky Joe’s Pub and is a comedy, music and burlesque show I toured with this summer to sell-out crowds called “Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad.”
